Knowing the law is essential when working with LGBT persons.  Different states offer different protections.  Some schools, businesses, organizations, cities, and even states include sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policies. Know the law for your state so that you are aware of whether or not the person with whom you work is being treated unfairly according to the law. For example, a person under 18 who is prematurely ejected from the home for any reason (such as being gay) without provisions for his or her care with another family member or friend, can be considered "neglect" and reportable to the appropriate authorities.  Tolerance of name calling such as "faggot" or "queer" could be considered sexual harassment in school.  Be sure to examine how the law relates to your work with LGBT youth.  Use the law to help keep youth safe.
